Welcome to 5th Grade ELA

Hello! My name is Tracey Thomas. I am super excited about being your child’s English and Language Arts teacher this year. I have a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education from the University of West Georgia and a master’s degree from Piedmont University. This is my second year at JMS teaching ELA in 5th grade. I taught five years in Henry County schools and six years as a contracted reading specialist in Pickens County from 2017-2022.
This year in 5th grade, your child will concentrate on improving fluency, understanding literary elements, and interpreting different genres of literature. We will focus on writing five paragraph narratives, opinion essays, and informational essays using research and organizing data. I want to help you foster a love of reading in your child. Reading to your child and with your child is one of the most important things you can do as a parent. I’m looking forward to a great year at JMS!
