Welcome to 6th Grade Math!!

Hello, my name is Christina Rodriguez.  I have been teaching 6th grade in the Pickens County School System going on my 2nd year. Previously, I taught at Southeast High School and Eastbrook Middle School in Dalton, GA for the previous 6 years.  I am very thankful for the opportunity that I've been given to help educate the children of Pickens County.  I hope to make this year an enjoyable experience for all of my students and help them develop a love for learning.

My Educational Degrees consist of…

Ed.S. in Secondary Mathematics Education - Kennesaw State University

M.Ed in Secondary Mathematics Education - Kennesaw State University

B.S. in Secondary Mathematics Education - Dalton State College

Outside the classroom, I enjoy spending time with my family, working in my garden, reading a good book, and traveling to new places. Please feel free to contact me as needed through school email or by phone.

Expectations

As a 6th grader, expectations are higher than they were as a 5th grader.  Obviously the same school rules apply, but there are a few other items that I expect as you come to our room each day.

  • Line up single-file and wait silently against the wall next to the door until the class has been invited in.
  • Enter the room calmly and quietly.
  • Take out the necessary materials for the day’s lesson.
  • Make sure your pencil is sharpened/loaded before the lesson begins.
  • If there are materials on the desks, do not touch until directed to do so.
  • Use all supplies as they are intended.
  • Clean up after yourself.
  • Raise your hand and wait to be called on.
  • Actively participate in class: ask/answer questions, volunteer to read or answer questions, stay on task.
  • Do all work when it is assigned and to the best of your ability.
  • Put your name on your assignments.
  • Stay in your seat or assigned area.
  • When excused, return all supplies to their appropriate storage, put your folders neatly on the designated shelves, clean your desk area, gather all of your belongings and exit quietly.
  • If you need help, please let me know.

Classroom

Most of the work we do will happen in the classroom. Besides reading, working problems on the board, and taking notes, we will participate in demonstrations, investigations, labs, and activities.  That being the case, it is very important that you do your best to be present every day.  While in class, questions and discussion are encouraged, as well as individual investigations. You will keep a folder which will contain vocabulary, notes from class, and assignments.

Grades

Grades will be taken from a variety of sources.

Formative

Folder checks

Lesson reviews

Math worksheets

Participation

Lesson quizzes

Summative

Unit Tests

  • Formative grades will be weighted at 60% and summative grades will be weighted at 40%.
  • If you score below an 85 on a unit test, you may do the associated green dots in Progress Learning to raise your grade to an 85.  It is your responsibility to let me know if you have completed green dots.
  • All work is due by the end of the week it is assigned unless stated otherwise.
  • Work missed due to an excused absence must be made up within a week of returning to school. Work missed due to an unexcused absence is due by the end of the week it was assigned.
  • Late work will be accepted, but may be given partial credit.
  • All graded assignments will be available online through Canvas.
  • All summative assignments must be completed at school. Arrangements can be made to make up missed assessments.
  • Any notes missed due to an absence are the responsibility of the student to make up. Copies will be located in the Weekly Absent folder. Notes may be copied from a friend. It is the student’s responsibility to make arrangements to copy notes on their time, not in class.
  • If you find yourself falling behind or needing extra help, let me know. I am available most days before class school to help.

Completeness- Are all of the notes, vocabulary, and worksheets included and complete? Is the Table of Contents updated to reflect the current contents?

Accuracy- Is the information written accurately? Does the data from worksheets reflect the actual results? Are vocabulary words spelled correctly? Do the page numbers in the Table of Contents match the actual page numbers and are the pages numbered correctly?

Neatness- Is the writing legible? There should be nothing other than the math information in the notebook: no doodles, messes, or work from other subjects. Pages should be intact, without rips or crumpling.

Distance Learning

If for any reason you find yourself unable to attend class in person, all lessons will be posted in Canvas. The directions for what is happening in class can be found in Lesson Plans. Any worksheets, videos, quiz links… can be found in Lesson Plans as well.

If the school is shut down due to weather or other circumstances, plans for video class meetings will be posted in the Lesson Plans section of Canvas.

Communications

If you need to contact me, you can do so by messaging me through Clever or emailing me at  ChristinaRodriguez@pickenscountyschools.org. I check these daily throughout the school week.  You may also call the school and leave a message. I will call you back as soon as I can.

Spiral Review

As a class, we have discussed the expectations of how to complete this assignment (attempt each question, show all work, complete in pencil only). There are 8-9 questions per day to be completed, and the questions should not take a lot of time to complete.  Students will have some time in class to work on the questions; however, if not completed in class the questions should be finished at home.  Each day students will have the opportunity to correct their mistakes when we check and correct the previous day's review. On Fridays, students will be allowed to use the corrected work to complete a short quiz over the same questions we discussed throughout the week during class. Students will receive a paper copy each week.  A digital copy will be posted in the student's Canvas.
